In 2019, Senate Bill 328, Pupil Attendance: School Start Time (Ed Code,46148), was approved requiring high school and middle school start times be adjusted to better meet the health needs of adolescents. The law states that high schools may begin no earlier than 8:30 am and middle schools no earlier than 8:00 am, and the new start times must go into effect no later than the 2022-23 school year. Following this year of distance learning and now hybrid learning at the secondary, with start times already being later, the district is considering implementing these changes in August of 2021 to minimize the impact on our students and family, rather than going back to the earlier times for just one year.
Here are some of the things that schools are doing to accommodate these changes
-School sites will be offering zero period, a class before the start of the school day, for tutoring, college classes, credit recovery, and/or other learning opportunities otherwise unavailable to students.
-The library will be open to provide a place to study for students who arrive early.
-Some athletic practices will take place in the morning to minimize the strain on student schedules and time management in the afternoon.
Below you will find a link to a survey the district is conducting. The purpose of this survey is to gather Pros and Cons to make adjustments within the law to meet the needs of our community best.
