The Hesperia Unified School District has recently been made aware of a new identity theft scam involving thieves posing as prospective employers online, including HUSD, so that victims will fill out fake job applications with their sensitive information. The District would like to remind our community that HUSD only posts employment opportunities on EdJoin.org (not ever on Indeed, Monster, ZipRecruiter, or any other job hosting site). Any other listings are scams and should be reported to law enforcement.
The District would also like to remind students, parents, and staff that over 300,000 Americans report falling victim to scams every year. As such, we urge our community to take steps to protect themselves from identity theft. Here are just a few tips for our community:
Never share sensitive information, even on documents that may seem legitimate (job applications, rental agreements, etc.) without checking to make sure it's appropriate.
Never share/post sensitive information on social media.
When online, only download or click links from reputable sources.
Choose strong passwords for all digital accounts or use a reputable password generator/storage app.
Have different passwords for different accounts instead of the same password for all accounts.
Never send gift card information through digital communication without verifying you should do so.
Always be skeptical when asked for your sensitive information.
Consider investing in one of the many identity theft protection services that are available.
