SPECIAL EDUCATION

CHILD FIND

The Hesperia School District recognizes its responsibility to provide a free and appropriate public education to eligible students with disabilities within its geographical boundaries. The District has a “child find” process that is designed to locate, identify and evaluate children with disabilities residing within its geographical boundaries preschool through grade 12 or through age 21 if they have not received a high school diploma.

If you know a child who lives within the boundaries of the Hesperia Unified School District and attends school in the District who may be in the need of special education and/or related services, please contact the principal of your child’s school or visit the Special Services department at the Administration & Educational Support Center for further information regarding the referral and evaluation process.

The District’s Child Find process extends to students with physical or mental impairments that substantially limit a major life activity. Such students may be eligible for services or accommodations pursuant to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. Section 504 is a Federal civil rights statute that prohibits discrimination against persons with disabilities and programs receiving Federal financial assistance. Please contact your child’s assistant principal for more information regarding Section 504 eligibility and services.

CONTINUUM OF SERVICES

The Special Services Department provides assessment, services, placement, and support to students. The Special Services Department has several District-wide programs serving Hesperia special needs students. An Individualized Education Plan(IEP) facilitates entry into these specialized programs. If you have questions about any program, please contact your child’s school psychologist.

The Special Services Department provides a continuum of special education and related services to students within the Hesperia Unified School District.

SPECIALIZED ACADEMIC INSTRUCTION (SAI)

Specialized Academic Instruction is the primary service delivery model of the district. SAI includes small group and individualized special education supports provided by a credentialed special education teacher. SAI may be provided in the general education setting, a special education classroom for a portion of the day, or extended placement in a self-contained special education classroom for the majority of the day.

CURRICULUM HELPING TO ACHIEVE MAXIMUM POTENTIAL OF STUDENTS (CHAMPS)

Location: Maple Elementary, Lime Street Elementary
This program serves elementary students with severe cognitive disabilities, providing a structured learning environment to address students’ individual and academic behavior needs in an intensive small group setting.

LIFE SKILLS (FORMERLY SECONDARY CAPA)

Location: Hesperia Junior High, Ranchero Middle School, Hesperia High School, Oak Hills High School, Sultana High School
The Life Skills program serves students in grades 7-12 with severe cognitive disabilities, providing a functional and academic curriculum to prepare students for life beyond high school. The program focuses on academics, practical life skills, and vocational experiences.

APPLIED INTENSIVE INTERVENTION MODEL (AIIM)

Location:Hesperia Junior High, Hesperia High School, Oak Hills High School, Sultana High School, Mojave High School
AIIM provides a self-contained, specialized education and behavior foundation focusing on individualized academic and behavioral expectations for each student.

FOUNDATIONS PRE-SCHOOL

Location: Lime Street Elementary
Foundations is a pre-school language program serving children, ages 3-4, with severe cognitive disabilities.

AUTISM

Location: Mesa Grande Elementary, Topaz Preparatory Academy
The Mesa Autism Program serves students with Autism who require a highly structured and intensive instructional model in grades K-6.

ELEMENTARY SUCCESS

Location: Eucalyptus Elementary, Joshua Circle Elementary, Kingston Elementary
Elementary SUCCESS provides a self-contained, specialized education and behavior foundation focusing on individualized academic and behavioral expectations for each student in grades K-6.

MODERATE/SEVERE

Location: Cottonwood Elementary, Juniper Elementary, Ranchero Middle School

A self-contained special day class providing support to students with more severe disabilities. The program provides small group and intensive individualized instruction.

RELATED SERVICES

Related services include speech and language instruction, occupational therapy, physical therapy, adaptive physical education, educationally related mental health services, and other services required for a student to receive a free appropriate public education.

ADDITIONAL PROGRAM OPTIONS

The district contracts with the Desert/Mountain SELPA, San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools, and various Non-Public Agencies and Schools to provide specialized education and services.

All placement decisions are the responsibility of a properly formed IEP team after a review of current data and student needs.
